JOB TITLE Director of Operations & Administration, First Christian Church (Houston)

LOCATION Houston, Texas

REPORTS TO Senior Pastor, First Christian Church (Houston)

SCHEDULE Office hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5:30pm. Work schedule is flexible, in coordination with the Senior Pastor, with emphasis being on the coverage of responsibilities. However, you will be occasionally expected to work extended hours and/or weekends to meet deadlines, or address special needs of the church.

CLASSIFICATION Full-Time, Exempt (no overtime paid)

COMPENSATION RANGE  $45,000 - $65,000 DOE (including optional participation in FCC health plan)


First Christian Church started in the last decades of the 19th Century as the first Disciples of Christ congregation in Houston, where a group of 15 met faithfully in prayer and Bible study for 15 years. The congregation outgrew several locations in the city until, in 1959, it came to its present location, where it became a metropolitan church that cast a wide net of influence throughout the city.

First Christian is in one of the most strategic areas of the city for ministry and outreach. It sits across the street from Rice University and is surrounded by the Texas Medical Center and Museum District. We are located near a mid-town area that is booming with an influx of new people, many of whom seek a vital life that a relationship with Jesus can bring. We are easily accessible from nearly every point of the compass.

In February 2017, after over a year of diligent work and prayerful consideration by the church’s leadership, FCC adopted a new set of guiding principles called the Genetic Map of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Houston (attached). This milestone achievement in the church’s history has reimagined our approach to ministry by bringing clarity to Who We Are, What We Are Called To Do, and What Are Our Most Important Beliefs (Core Values) as a church community. We understand that God’s revelation to us in these areas form both our mandate for ministry and the very reason for our existence as a church community. To best position us to fulfil this mandate, we also committed to a compressive organizational restructuring that includes the creation of Mission Control, and its head, the Director of Operations & Administration.

Mission Control (likened to that made famous by NASA) is an office or sub-organization, led by the Director of Operations & Administration, whose purpose is to facilitate the accomplishment of our mission/ministry objectives through:

A) General Operations Management (including facilities management),

B) General Administrative Support,

C) Scheduling & Communications Management, and

D) Maintaining a detailed view of the resourcing needs of all our activities while providing resource procurement, coordination, and management guidance to the FCC leadership, staff, and volunteers.

Overcoming challenges defines the character of this group, as they model the FCC core value of being “faith-filled, optimistic, and solution oriented,” with the motto “Adapt, Improvise, and Overcome!”


Using the FCC Genetic Map as a foundational guide (found at, under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor, and as led by the Spirit of God, the Director of Operations and Administration leads the Mission Control group in facilitating the resourcing of our mission/ministry objectives. As a multi-talented generalist, the Director of Operation and Administration emphasizes the employment of skillful management and resourcefulness over technical competency, as areas requiring specific technical competency or expertise are generally resourced through staff, volunteers, or by third-party contractors, all of whom the Director supervises.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned), the execution of which may be delegated to staff, volunteers, or third-party contractors under the supervision of the Director of Operations & Administration:

General Operations

  • Facilities Management
  • Maintenance & Upkeep (including facilities support for First Christian School) – Ensure that our facilities are kept clean and in good working order so as to adequately support the activities taking place on our campus.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, deed restrictions, and building codes as it pertains to the management and use of our facilities.
  • Facilities Rental & Usage (including coordination with third-party event management)
    • Oversee the rental of our facilities to individuals or organizations whose character, activities (whether on or off campus), and representations are not in conflict with our Core Beliefs or Guiding Principles.
    • Develop and enforce guidelines for usage and rules of conduct for renters
    • Recommend to the Financial Oversight Team rental rates
  • Coordinate with designated Owner’s Representatives on capital project
  • Maintain membership directory and electronic communications lists
  • In coordination with the Senior Pastor and other ministry heads, develop and maintain methods for generating statistical data – with analysis and reporting -- on service attendance, member engagement, activity participation, etc.

General Administrative Support

  • Admin support for Senior Pastor and other staff as needed
  • Manage staff appreciation activities
  • Create, edit, and publish the slides for services at FCC
  • Create, edit, and produce printed materials (i.e. – flyers, signage, etc.) in support of church-related activities (NOTE: This is a low-priority function of Mission Control. Such support may not always be available. Ultimately, whoever has management responsibility for specific activities or events will be responsible for the creation and production of the materials that they need.)
  • Ensure that both decorative elements and supplies needed to support our worship services are procured or produced, available, and setup as required (i.e. – flowers, bibles for giveaway, communion elements, print stock, writing implements, cake and certificates for baptism, etc.).
  • Assist with clerical tasks (faxing, phoning, messaging, delivering items, etc.)
  • Keep necessary records for Disciples of Christ reports
  • Facilitate staff meetings
  • Provide general support to FCC’s Disciples Women’s Ministry

Scheduling & Communications Management

  • Develop and manage (control) the scheduling of all FCC activities both on and off campus. The primary purpose of this high-level support function is to keep FCC-related activities (including facilities rentals) organized and adequately resourced in a timely manner using one or more calendars. Neither Mission Control nor the Director of Operations & Administration is responsible for more granular scheduling of the activities of areas under the direction of other church leaders or third-party renters.
  • Oversee the management of our website’s content, keeping all information up-to-date.
  • Write, edit, and publish weekly our electronic newsletter (eNews)
  • Write, edit, and publish periodically our “eBlasts.” Included are urgent/emergency communications for distribution to the whole church.
  • Oversee the distribution of mail, packages/deliveries, and inter-office memos
  • Produce printed materials in support of our worship services as needed
  • Act as our communications liaison to community stakeholders as needed
  • Collaborate ministry/event/activity leadership in the promotion and publicity of events and volunteer needs.
  • Assist with camp and conference registration
  • Coordinate quarterly staff reports for presentation to the General Board
  • Facilitate communications and visits from FCC leadership with homebound members

Resource Procurement, Coordination, and Management Guidance

  • Collaborate with the Financial Oversight Group to develop a budget for all areas under the direct management of Mission Control, including: Facilities operations and maintenance expenditures, office management expenditures, and rental income.
  • Vendor selection, contracting, and management (including contract administration)
  • General office management, including purchasing and management of office supplies
  • Act as principal liaison for the church to those seeking assistance from the church, directing them, when possible, to the most appropriate resource to help.
  • Coordinate with Children's Minister for child care needs for meetings and events

Demonstrable experience in managing a broad range of responsibilities that are both “customer facing” and “back-of-the-house.” Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on operations management or administration (particularly in the field of hospitality) desirable.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The work environment is typical for schools, offices, and churches. The physical demands required to fulfill the duties and responsibilities are consistent with normal office work and will also require you to access some areas that will not be accessible to the general public (i.e. – basements, rooftops that are accessible without the need for ladders or special equipment, utility closets, etc.). These do not include areas that require special equipment or training to work safely in. You must be able to lift 40 pounds.
